Running is a paradox: on the surface, it is one of the simplest sports; however, the emotions and experiences it evokes are more complex than those of any other sport I know. The simplicity of running creates an emptiness that provides the space for the flood of emotions, thoughts, and sensations that are experienced by runners. The opportunity to experience a journey, both physically and emotionally, is why I lace up my shoes, with the same motivation, I am sharing tales from runners’ journeys here in a more authentic way.
The exact point of a run that I cherish the most is right before the first foot strike. This moment is like right before a painter’s brush touches the canvas for the first time; it is both full of emptiness and anticipation. For in this moment, I have no choice but to move forward, face the unknown, and start creating the narrative of the run.
The range of feelings following the first step is larger than in most things we do in life. Over the course of the one run, I have experienced both nirvana-like trances and never-ending purgatory. Much like the mental experience, the motivations and results are equally varied; I've both run to prove to myself that I am capable, and to prove to others that I am worthy of their praise. Silmilery, I've traversed through remote, technical, and rarely visited places, and I've run through urban landscapes and mazes of skyscrapers. These layered experiences, motivations, and settings are the required building blocks of all the best running stories.
Narratives about running take place over the course of a run, race, season, or a lifetime and unfold over long time scales. As a result, the best way to tell these stories is not through still pictures or short-form videos, but rather long-form media where the narrator has the space to allow themes to fully develop. In the end, no run is about any specific set of steps, but rather about how those steps connect throughout the run.
My goal with this project, About-Running.com, is to work with athletes to help share stories that are complex, nuanced, layered, and compelling on a deep level. Through my writing, I hope to provide a space for runners to share stories outside of the confines of modern social media. In addition, the intention of this project goes beyond just telling stories; each featured article will be paired with a limited piece of merch tied to the narrative, and a majority of the proceeds from that item will go directly back to the featured athlete. This gives fans a deeper way to connect with and support the athletes they love.
